Surfing On Caffeine

They just sit there, hour after hour, staring at the screen in front of them, fingers sporadically tapping, tap-tap-tapping on the keyboards. Next to their machines, cups of something sit - perhaps a soy chai latte?

Enter the curious subculture of hotspot cafes. Geeks like me have finally been persuaded to abandon our insular lifestyle of surfing the net in our bachelor pads, alone with our generic crackers and home-made mugs of milo. Instead, we now brave a world of surfing the internet out in public, occasionally alone still, but with upgrades to imported chips and franchised frappucino. Geeks will now be more social, perhaps even chatting with some cute teenage girl named sweepea90, blissfully unaware that sweepea90's actually that geriatric man sitting two tables away.

OK, I admit I actually haven't quite taken to this brave new world yet. Back in the days when my PC was constrained to sitting on a desk, I pretty much liked the idea of sitting in a nice cafe all by myself, just reading a book. But in truth, I've only done that a couple of times. It would have been different if I was in Melbourne where the neighbourhood I lived in had great little cafes just a block away that served cheap lattes. Here in the valley, going to a decent cafe would mean driving half an hour through horrendous traffic. And so expensive to have a drink there some more!

So I guess my notebook won't be going out all that often, the poor thing. But at least it's had it's first outing the other day when I was hanging out with Jon. Of course, prim and proper people like us don't surf porn sites (at least not in public). No, we were expanding our knowledge and wisdom by catching up on international current events.

Ah, mi petit notebook. Hope you enjoyed that taste of fresh air. It'll be a while before you get it again. A long while.

Hey, I resemble that comment :P And yeah, I have been there often enough especially when the broadband connection was taking some time to get set up.

Of course now I stay home with my laptop and my crackers.

Ugh, I never take my Vaio out anymore. Unless something dire happens to my connection.

Oops, I meant, I never take her out to cafes, I mean. I still lug her around the world, though. You wouldn't believe how stingy hotels are with their wifi. Everywhere also have to pay! *snort*

My nearest city is all going wifi next March, hooray! I'll be able to work from any cafe in town, or even a park, or by the river.

At the moment the only place I can go is Starbucks, and it's too busy for me to brave working there while getting dirty looks for taking up a seat for hours.

But I _do_ use my laptop on the train from Newcastle to London. The 3hr journey goes far more quickly when you have a wifi connection.

I only venture out to starbucks with my laptop when TNB decides to cut my power off for the heck of it. Hopefully it doesn't happen all that much =P

My laptop gets a lot of fresh air, maybe coz it's technically not mine (office yg punya). The laptop I have at home is paraplegic, move it and it turns off by itself. Anyway, at one point I was so desperate to go online (my home has no line), I actually bought 3 months of Airzed subsciption to go online at various Coffee Beans, etc. Does "prim and proper" include not downloading porn? :D

me laptop had a near fatal caffeine accident at Starbuck, Borders. A waiter tripped and spilt some drinks after he cleaned the table next to mine. Fortunately it only kena my lap top bag. The poor guy was utterly mortified & apologized profusely. I gave him a smile and told him it’s OK & just be careful next time. He was so relieved and to thank me, he offered me a cup Frappucino :)

I bought a small laptop (yes, 12.1" is small, hunny, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise) because I had notions of taking it with me everywhere to do portable computing... stuff.

But so far, it's just been sat on a padded food tray next to my bed.

At least it's still nice and shiny.

No way I'm gonna bring my laptop out... it's too heavy for me! Surprisingly in Sydney where I was recently, I didn't see such trend as much as here in KL. Interesting.

I don't know why would people ever bring their laptops out in the public - to show off or to just leech of that free internet? =P
